Rainier Beach to retire Nate Robinson’s jersey
September 7th, 2010
Rainier Beach is going to retire Nate Robinson’s jersey during an assembly at the school from 11 a.m.-noon on Friday.
During Robinson’s senior season with the Vikings in 2002 he averaged 17.9 points, seven rebounds, seven assists and three steals a game, leading the team to a Class 3A state championship. Rainier Beach finished the year with a 28-1 record.
After a standout stint at the University of Washington, Robinson move on to NBA and currently plays for the Boston Celtics. The two-time winner of the NBA’s dunk contest lives in Seattle during the offseason and spends a lot of time in the community with his Seattle basketball brethren.

Class 4A and 3A state football rankings — Week 1
September 4th, 2010
Going into the season, I knew there was a chance both Skyline and Bothell would lose Week 1. However, I still felt like both programs deserved to be at the top of the Class 4A rankings.
After watching the development of Spartans quarterback Max Browne in a close loss to Liberty and the way the Cougars played in the first quarter against California powerhouse Mission Viejo, I’m still confident both teams will be in contention for a state title.
However, it’s tough to lose early and stay at the top in the rankings, especially in a year considered to be wide-open by most people who follow high-school football in Washington.
So, after looking around the state, I dropped both teams slightly.
Auburn jumps to No. 1 this week. The Trojans didn’t cruise in their opener against Kentridge, but they were able to hold on. They get the top spot, for now.
Skyline falls to No. 2 and faces another tough test in a rivalry game against Bellevue on Saturday at Memorial Stadium. Bothell is now No. 5 and another KingCo 4A school, Issaquah, jumps to No. 6.
Skyview (Vancouver) stays at No. 7 after losing to Sherwood High School, a very good team in Oregon.
The only other question in 4A is: What should happen with Union? The Titans are going to be good. In the second half, Bellevue had the ball for so long Union didn’t really get a chance to do anything on offense.
This week, though, Richland takes over at No. 10 after blanking Pasco.
There were only a few changes in 3A this week. In addition to watching three of the top 10 4A teams, I caught six of the top 10 3A teams in their openers.
I was impressed with most of them.
Liberty played as well as any team in the state this weekend, knocking off Skyline. The Patriots don’t get much rest, playing Issaquah in Week 2. It should be another game with big-time passing stats.
Bellevue played well in the second half of its win against Union and it looks like the Wing-T is as difficult to slow down as ever.
Camas played a really fast Timberline squad and the Papermakers proved they belong with the top teams in the state.
Capital jumps all the way to No. 5. The Cougars dominated O’Dea. They are physical and never let the Irish into the game. O’Dea drops to 10. I still think the Irish will be fine by the end of the season.
Class 4A
1. Auburn (1-0) – Beat Kentridge, 28-14 2. Skyline (Sammamish) (0-1) – Lost to Liberty, 39-34 3. Gonzaga Prep (Spokane) (1-0) – Beat Shadle Park, 45-21 4. Towne named Indiana State head coach
September 3rd, 2010
Indiana State will begin the 2010-11 season under the direction of newly-hired head coach Greg Towne. Towne was hired just three weeks after former head coach Mike Whitson resigned to take the head coaching job at Eastern Kentucky, his alma mater.
Towne is a graduate of Wichita State University, and spent 22 years playing professionally. He was a member of the Nationwide Tour for five years, where he notched 20 top-25 finishes. Towne also qualified for the 1997 U.S. Open at Congressional Country Club.
Towne has extensive experience as a teaching professional, working with tour pros for 10 years. He was the head instructor at Rabito Golf from 2001-09.
“Greg Towne brings a wealth of teaching and playing experience to our program,” said Ron Prettyman, Indiana State Director of Athletics. “He is a Midwest native and a product of one of our Missouri Valley Conference schools. He is inheriting a quality group of young ladies that excel in the classroom and on the golf course. Coach Towne is a nice addition to the Sycamore head coaching family.”
Indiana State finished the 2009-10 season ranked No. 147 in the Golfweek/Sagarin College Rankings and open the fall on Sept. 11-12 at the Redbird Invitational in Normal, Ill.

It’s decision time for Skyline’s Kasen Williams
August 26th, 2010
This is it. It doesn’t seem like that long ago I went out to watch Skyline’s 2009 scrimmage hoping to meet Kasen Williams and his parents for the first time.
That was a year ago. A lot has changed since then. Skyline won its third straight state title. Jake Heaps graduated and Williams solidified his place as one of the top recruits in the country.
Shortly after the Spartans wrap up their scrimmage, Williams will select one of the five hats — one for each of his final list of five schools. The expectation is for the 6-foot-3, 200-pound receiver to pick Washington and follow in the footsteps of his father, Aaron, who played for the Huskies from 1979-82.
The senior was non-commital when I asked him about it Thursday. He did say the decision has been made and, once he announces it, that’s going to be final.
It was important for him to make the decision in front of his Skyline teammates, with all of the players in the junior football program looking on, so he picked out the date where the Spartans’ football family would be able to attend.
“I’ve been in the program,” Williams said. “I was in the same position as these youth kids and I wanted to give my appreciation back and just show them that one day I was in your shoes and one day you’ll be in mine.
“To commit in front of them, I know a lot of them look up to me and that’s one of the things that’s been on everyone’s mind. To do it in front of them really shows my appreciation for, not only the players, but the coaches, too.”
I’m heading out there in a little while. I will have Twitter updates @masonkelley throughout and I’m going to try and get some audio and video as well. It depends on how things are set up.
There will be more on the blog later. I’ll also tweet some notes on quarterback Max Browne. I’m intrigued to see how he throws the ball.
