Lake Stevens (4A), Enumclaw (3A) eye wrestling titles
February 17th, 2011
It’s not too late to get to the Tacoma Dome for the finals of Mat Classic XXIII, the state wrestling tournaments for all classifications.
Finals start at 5 p.m. If you’ve never watched this event, you’re really missing out.
The 4A and 3A team races are too close to call.
In 4A, Lake Stevens currently leads Moses Lake, 123.5-111. But the Chiefs have four in the finals, including defending champions Brian Chamberlain at 215 and Kabe Fluaitt at 285.
In 3A, Enumclaw leads University of Spokane, 129.5-117.5, but the Titans (4A champs a year ago) still have a shot with five in the championship matches. Enumclaw has three in the finals — Lucas Somera (135), Josh Musick (152) and Kario Wallen (160).
Lake Stevens got just two through to the 4A finals — Jesse Peterson at 103 and Steven Walkley at 140. At least one of them likely will have to win for the Vikings to hang on for the team title, Six other Lake Stevens wrestlers are taking home medals — Ryan Rodorigo (third at 119), Eric Solar (fourth at 112), Andrew King (fourth at 152), Kinsey Johnson (fifth at 135), Jack Reeves (sixth at 145) and Cody Schlosser (sixth at 285).
Mead and Central Valley, both from Spokane, have the other two 4A trophies wrapped up — it’s just a matter of order. Graham-Kapowsin just missed a trophy, finishing fifth, and does not have anyone in the championship round.
Edmonds-Woodway is in eighth place and has two finalists in Ryan DeWeese (13) and Mac Hutchison (140).
It was a tough day for Tahoma, the runnerup last year. The Bears are at No. 9 and had just four of their 11 qualifiers earn medals. Steven Hopkins, who won at 103 as a sophomore last year, fell in the 119-pound semifinals and ultimately finished fourth, as did teammate Dan Haniger (135). Garrett Autrey (160) took seventh and Tim Whitehead (103) eighth.
The good news for the Bears is that all 11 wrestlers they brought here are underclassmen.
Both Jefferson wrestlers here have a chance for titles — Zeke Nistrain (152) and K.W. Williams (189). Both won their semifinal matches in overtime.
The only other local 4A finalists are Ruben Navejas of Kentwood (112), Alex Coffan of Mariner (160) and Dylan Rugledge of Auburn (215). Auburn’s Nick Conlan, ranked No. 1 on 285 and a second-place finisher last year, lost in the semifinals and finished third.
There are plenty of area wrestlers in the 3A finals besides the Enumclaw trio, including Bishop Blanchet’s upbeaten Peter Johnson at 171. Bonney Lake has two title hopefuls in Colton Tracy (202) and Andrew Cunningham (112).
It will be an all-KingCo showdown at 285, where Josh Mitchell of Mount Si and Jeramiah Laufasa of Juanita go at it again. The other local finalists are Josh St. Marie from Glacier Peak (130), Hamilton Noel from Liberty (152), Conner Boyce from Everett (160) and Lucas Huyber from Auburn Mountainview (189).
Interlake’s Jacob Marks goes for the 152-pound crown in 2A.
On the girls side, I’ll be keeping an eye on four finalists — Madeleine Wolczko from Vashon (119), Katrynia Todd from Auburn (140), Brandae Grein from Interlake (160) and Jamila Culcleasure from Highline (285).
Federal Way senior Jocie Weinberger, who placed second here the past two years, lost in the 130-pound semifinals and finished fourth.
