Four Missouri High School Students Selected as Delegates in the U.S. Senate Youth Program

The U.S. Senate Youth Program will be held March 5-12, 2011, in Washington, D.C. The two Missouri students will assemble with 102 other delegates to learn about the functions of the federal government. Throughout their week-long stay, the student leaders will hear major policy addresses by federal officials, participate in a meeting with a justice of the U.S. Supreme Court and meet with their senators and other national policymakers.

The winners and alternates were chosen from among eight finalists. A panel made up of staff from the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education selected the delegates. More than 80 juniors or seniors were nominated for the program this year by principals from public and nonpublic schools. Their nominations were based on school and community leadership, community service and academic achievement.

The annual program was established by the U.S. Senate in 1962 to provide a unique educational experience for outstanding high school students interested in pursuing careers in public service. Financial support for the program is provided by The Hearst Foundations.
