Grand Rapids Superintendent Bernard Taylor to get $400,000 package in severance deal
July 3rd, 2011

Bernard Taylor will receive a severance package worth about $400,000, paying him 18 months of wages and two years of an annuity, according to a statement released by the district.
Taylor was not present at the meeting where members voted 8-0 to accept his resignation, and district spokesman John Helmholdt said the superintendent would not be available for comment any time on Thursday.
But the district did release a statement from Taylor:

I appreciate the wisdom, foresight, and careful deliberation exhibited by the Board of Education during this difficult time of transition.
While the time has come for me to pursue other opportunities, make no mistake that I am and will remain focused on our students, improving student achievement, and implementing the necessary reforms to keep GRPS moving in the right direction.
I am very proud of what we were able to accomplish in such a short period of time, and I look forward to working with the Board to build on our successes while also positioning the district for a smooth transition of leadership.
As part of the agreement, Taylor will remain on the job for the 2011-2012 school year with his term officially ending on June 30, 2012. Upon completion of his service at GRPS, Dr. Taylor will receive 18 months of wages, one year of benefits and two years of an annuity.
The district also released a statement from board President Senita Lenear:
The agreement today establishes a clear picture about the future leadership of the district for students, parents and our community.
It provides for much needed stability and continuity in leadership during this transition period which is particularly important given the districts financial position, potential educational reforms at the state and national level, the pending change in the states testing cut scores, among other issues.
It also establishes a time frame by which the Board of Education may develop and initiate the process for selecting the next superintendent. We want to extend our thanks and appreciation to Dr. Taylor for his years of outstanding service and his commitment to working with us through this time of transition.
