10 questions for the high school football season

August 21st, 2010

Which blue-chipper faces the biggest challenge?

Madison’s Aaron Green is coming off a drop in production from his sophomore to junior seasons. Steele’s Malcolm Brown has to play with a new offensive line.

But the biggest challenge might be for Stevens’ Mykkele Thompson to adjust to a full-time role at quarterback. Thompson’s entering his third varsity season, but has only attempted 53 total passes. Splitting time at QB with Brandon Pratt last season, he was primarily the Falcons’ running option. Now it’s Thompson’s chance to show he’s a versatile leader.

Can Johnny Manziel and Kerrville Tivy go for three?

The prototype do-it-all QB was Manziel, the E-N Area Offensive Player of the Year who accounted for 54 total TDs in 2009.

He’s helped the Antlers reach the Class 4A Division II state semifinals for the past two seasons, and Tivy returns 13 starters this year.

But the road could be tougher this time, because Tivy likely will be in the Division I postseason bracket, where Lake Travis has reigned for the past three years.

Is the area’s most prolific running back not a blue-chipper and a 5-foot-5 junior instead?

While Green and Brown take the spotlight, it wouldn’t be surprising to see Judson’s Quaylon Jones lead the area in rushing.

Jones, all 5-5 and 165 pounds of him, had 1,509 yards his sophomore season. His workload increased as the season went on, and his three 200-yard games came against 27-5A’s other three playoff teams in Wagner, East Central and Corpus Christi Carroll.
